During the British rule, two zamindars of Jessore district came to Gopalganj district. They started living in Ujani village of Muksudpur upazila of this district. The names of these two zamindar dynasties were Roy Govinda and Sur Narayan. They introduced zamindari system here and built two-storied and three-storied palaces here. In addition to these palaces, they built sitting rooms, ponds, monasteries and temples. They had this zamindari covering an area of about fifty hectares. Later, during the partition, the zamindars moved to neighboring India. However, there is still a descendant of Zamindar Sur Narayan, whose name is Samarendra Chandra Roy. Whose age will be around 60 or 65. The zamindars of Ujani had a total of seven zamindari. They donated one of their zamindari areas, Khalia Zamindar Bari, to Zamindar Raja Rammohun Roy Chowdhury.
